Help us rebuild the Sursock Museum

We're heartbroken over the thousands of people who were killed, injured, or missing following the massive blast that shook Beirut on August 4, leaving its streets in shambles and rendering many homeless.

Situated a mere 800 meters from the explosion site, the Sursock Museum endured colossal damage. The building’s windows – including the facade’s signature tinted glass – were shattered. Most of the building’s structural elements turned into rubble. Parts of the drop ceilings collapsed; and all wooden and fire-proof metallic doors were dislodged and broken throughout the building. In addition, the Museum’s recently built constructional components, including the elevators and service car-lift that were added as part of the 2008-2015 expansion and renovation project, were destroyed.

Fifty artworks – out of a total of 130 exhibited works – sustained various degrees of damage. Most notably, Nicolas Sursock’s portrait – painted by Kees van Dongen in 1930, and considered to be one of the collection’s most valued artworks – was badly ripped.

The reconstruction works needed to restore the Museum to its original state are of monumental scale. We are currently assessing the extent of the damage and the scale of the anticipated reconstruction; while some parts of the Museum can be fixed, others need to be rebuilt altogether. The cost of implementing such a mammoth and lengthy rebuild is substantial.

We need your help to make it happen. Every donation counts, no matter how small. Your support will go toward rebuilding the Museum, and making it accessible again for thousands of visitors every year.
