The Beirut port explosion

The Beirut port blast of August 4th caused tremendous damage to the city, killing 200 people, injuring 7,000 others, and leaving 300,000 families homeless.

Situated a mere 800 meters from the explosion site, the Sursock Museum was severely impacted. The building’s windows – including the facade’s signature tinted glass – were shattered. Most of the building’s structural elements turned into rubble. Parts of the drop ceilings collapsed; and all wooden and fire-proof metallic doors were dislodged and broken throughout the building. In addition, the Museum’s recently built constructional components, including the elevators and service car-lift that were added as part of the 2008-2015 expansion and renovation project, were destroyed. 57 artworks – out of a total of 130 exhibited works – sustained various degrees of damage. Most notably, Nicolas Sursock’s portrait – painted by Kees van Dongen in 1930, and considered to be one of the collection’s most valued artworks – was badly ripped.

Feel free to reach out if you would like to access the building's assessment damage reports and the artworks' condition reports.

Rebuilding the Museum: where we stand today

The reconstruction works needed to restore the Museum to its original state are estimated at 3 million USD.

With your help, we have raised a total of 679,662.32 USD; of which 568,231 USD come from grants and institutions; and 111,431.32 USD from individual donations. This is a great steppingstone to recovery, for which we are immensely grateful.

In particular, we would like to thank the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Areas (ALIPH) for granting us the generous sum of 500,000 USD to weatherproof the building; the Goethe-Institut for giving us a grant of 10,000 USD to purchase rehousing and conservation material for our archive; as well as Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al-Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, who raised 58,231 USD for the benefit of the Museum, on behalf of the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage.

We still have a long way to go, and we need your help. Every donation counts, no matter how small. Your support will go toward rebuilding the Museum, and making it accessible again for thousands of visitors every year.
