This four-part workshop led by Joseph Kai accentuates the importance of criticism, critical thinking, and press illustration in the field of journalism and politics in the social/cultural landscape.

You will be invited to represent your most critical ideas by using black and white ink on paper, and then transforming then into an easily publishable format. After exploring some press illustrators, you will brainstorm your own ideas, content, and structure, taking into consideration their impact on readers. You will be technically guided to think about composition, construction, movement, and typography using black Chinese ink and felt pens. Finally, you will create your completed simple zine layout, print it, and bind it using different techniques.

This workshop is programmed in conjunction with the exhibition Pierre Sadek: Picturing History.

This workshop is for aspiring and practicing individuals interested in illustration and comics. A small background in the given area is recommended. Participants should be able to attend all four sessions.

Joseph Kai is an independent illustrator, comics author, and editor-in-chief of Samandal.
